ATHENA (MLS) Multi Layer Gasket

Material

ATHENA MLS gaskets consist of 3 to 5 layers made from various raw materials. The combination of outer and inner layers is engineered to withstand higher compression levels than standard configurations, with the type of steel varying based on engine requirements. These gaskets ensure an even torque load across the sealing surface, effectively compensating for any bore distortion. They are suitable for both aluminum heads paired with cast iron blocks and aluminum heads with aluminum blocks.

Manufacturing Process

Athena MLS Head Gaskets are crafted from high-grade 301 stainless steel in a full hard state. Each layer is precisely formed using advanced laser cutting technology and is embossed through an optimized formation process. Two of the gasket layers undergo a stress-relieving process to minimize stress induced by embossment. A proprietary two-part polymer coating is applied post-stress relief, ensuring uniform coverage of the outer layers without any breaks in the coating, which guarantees a micro seal for engine coolant and oil fluids. Athena MLS gaskets are rigorously tested and analyzed on engine dynos for endurance performance.

Gas Stopper Technology

Gas stopper technology is a critical design feature of racing MLS head gaskets. The stainless-steel stopper layer incorporates an innovative “active fold” that provides a high-pressure seal around the cylinder bore when the cylinder head is tightened. This gas stopper is strategically placed around the combustion chamber, allowing for tighter clamping between the cylinder head and engine block, thereby preventing gas leaks from the combustion chamber. This design also helps avoid component distortion by facilitating quicker temperature equalization among various components.

Proprietary Coating Technology

The two-part polymer coating applied after the stress-relieving process ensures uniform coverage of the outer layers, providing a continuous seal. The first layer is a high-temperature compound that conforms to fill surface irregularities of the engine block deck and cylinder head, accommodating surface finishes up to 60 Ra, compared to the typical requirement of 30 Ra for MLS head gaskets. The second layer is designed to release easily, preventing adhesion to mating surfaces during engine disassembly.
