ATHENA (MLS) Multi Layer Gasket

Material

ATHENA MLS gaskets consist of 3 to 5 layers made from various raw materials, designed to perform at higher compression levels than stock configurations. The type of steel used varies based on engine requirements. These gaskets provide an even torque load across the sealing surface, compensating for any bore distortion. They are suitable for both aluminum heads to cast iron blocks and aluminum heads to aluminum blocks.

Manufacturing Process

Athena MLS Head Gaskets are manufactured from high-grade 301 stainless steel. Each layer is formed using advanced laser cutting technology and is embossed through an optimized formation process. Two layers undergo a stress-relieving process to minimize stress induced by embossment. A proprietary two-part polymer coating is applied post-stress relief, ensuring uniform coverage and a micro seal for engine coolant and oil fluids.

Athena MLS gaskets are rigorously tested on Engine Dynos for performance and endurance.

Gas Stopper Technology

Gas stopper technology is integral to the design of racing MLS head gaskets. The stainless-steel stopper layer features an “active fold” that creates a high-pressure seal around the cylinder bore during cylinder head tightening. This design allows for tighter clamping between the cylinder head and engine block, preventing gas leaks from the combustion chamber and reducing component distortion through quicker temperature equalization.

Proprietary Coating Technology

The two-part polymer coating, applied after stress relief, ensures uniform coverage of the outer layers without breaks in the coating. The first layer is a high-temperature compound that conforms to irregularities in the engine block deck and cylinder head surfaces, sealing surface finishes up to 60 Ra. The second layer releases easily, preventing sticking to mating surfaces during engine disassembly.
