ATHENA (MLS) Multi Layer Gasket

Material

ATHENA MLS gaskets consist of 3 to 5 layers made from various raw materials. The combination of outer and inner layers is engineered to withstand higher compression levels than standard configurations, with the type of steel varying based on engine requirements. These gaskets ensure an even torque load across the sealing surface, compensating for any bore distortion. They are suitable for both aluminum heads paired with cast iron blocks and aluminum heads with aluminum blocks.

Manufacturing Process

Athena MLS Head Gaskets are crafted from high-grade 301 stainless steel in a full hard state. Each layer is precisely formed using advanced laser cutting technology and is embossed through an optimized formation process. Two of the head gasket layers undergo a stress-relieving process to minimize stress induced by embossment forming. A proprietary two-part polymer coating is applied post-stress relief, ensuring uniform coverage of the outer layers without breaks in the coating, which aids in sealing engine coolant and oil fluids. These gaskets are rigorously tested on engine dynamometers and for endurance performance.

Gas Stopper Technology

The gas stopper technology is a critical design feature of racing MLS head gaskets. The stainless-steel stopper layer incorporates an innovative “active fold” that provides a high-pressure seal around the cylinder bore during cylinder head tightening. Positioned around the combustion chamber, the gas stopper allows for tighter clamping between the cylinder head and engine block, preventing gas leaks from the combustion chamber and reducing component distortion through quicker temperature equalization.

Proprietary Coating Technology

The two-part polymer coating, applied after the stress-relieving process, guarantees uniform coverage of the outer layers, ensuring no breaks in the coating. The first layer is a high-temperature compound that conforms to fill surface irregularities on the engine block deck and cylinder head, sealing surface finishes up to 60 Ra, compared to the typical MLS head gasket requirement of 30 Ra. The second layer is designed to release easily, preventing adhesion to mating surfaces during engine disassembly.
